Protecting Land in Uruguay

Personal / Community: Community project

Nature sub-categories: Ecosystem health, Conservation

Description: Uruguay has made tremendous efforts in protecting their natural landscapes with its first 15 protected areas, which is a significant increase for the country. The country struggles with protecting nature due to land ownership rights and its agricultural dominant economy with 96% of land privately owned. Environmental authorities are currently working on incorporating nature preservation in the protected lands(2020-2022) in joint programming between the government and UNDP. The crucial aspect of the project is restoring degraded landscapes and protecting ecosystems by improving connection between protected areas.

Why I love this solution: This is an interesting solution because there are conservation projects implemented and created despite such a high percentage of protected/private land. Structural changes in the land seem more difficult to implement change over time, thus these are solutions that are working around and through the structured legal layout of the country.
