Lightyear. One: Prototype of solar car with 450-mile range

Personal / Community: Community project

Cities sub-categories: Transportation, Renewable energy

Description: The prototype of a solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) able to travel 450 miles on a single charge was officially unveiled in Katwijk, the Netherlands today (25 June). The EV is additionally capable of topping up its own battery by self-charging using its rooftop solar array, with Lightyear claiming that the motorists will be able to travel up to 20,000km (12,420 miles) annually on solar power alone whilst using the model.

Why I love this solution: This is a big step towards decarbonizing transportation, and especially has tackled the challenge of using solar power for cars. Hopefully this prototype is a success and will be available to wider markets.
