Description: Thailand grocery stores are now replacing plastic packaging for produce with banana leaves to combat the unnecessary use of plastic wrap and packaging. To secure the banana leaves around the vegetables, bamboo twist ties were used, which are biodegradable as well.

Why I love this solution: i love this solution because it is a very creative, sustainable and simple innovation that reduces plastic waste at grocery stores and at home. The amount of plastic waste generated from our supermarkets is outrageous, completely unsustainable and toxic to our environment and inevitably to ourselves. We finally are moving away from plastic bags in many countries, but in most grocery stores, we still haven't managed to avoid excess plastic packaging (unless you shop at primarily bulk grocery stores). I care about this issue deeply, and find grocery shopping sometimes stressful and demoralizing to bring home so much plastic waste. Why do two bell peppers need to be wrapped in plastic packaging that will take hundreds of years to decompose? I truly believe that biodegradable solutions like this one will start revolutionizing future packaging in our grocery stores.
