Ghana Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP)

Personal / Community: Community project

Nature sub-categories: Conservation, Wildlife, Ecosystem health, Legislation, regulation, mandate

Description: This is a five-year (2014-2019) Sustainable Fisheries Management Project (SFMP) in the Central and Western regions of Ghana funded by USAID and led by USAID’s Feed The Future (FTF) initiative. The objective is to rebuild fisheries stocks and catches through adopting responsible fishing practices. FTF works closely with the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development and the Fisheries Commission to end overfishing of key fish stocks that are crucial to local food security. More than 100,000 men and women involved in the local fishing industry benefit and will benefit from this project in the future. To achieve these project goals, SFMP will 1. Improve conditions for effective collaborative management of marine resources; 2. Increase the use of science and research to inform decision making; 3. Increase public awareness of fisheries issues and garner political support; 4. Implement management initiatives for several targeted fisheries ecosystems.

Why I love this solution: I love this solution because it targets critical issues behind depleting fish stocks and food security in the most vulnerable countries. It engages with local fishing communities, governments and NGOs to understand which solutions work best in the community, and which solutions increase tangible results through community-level participation and awareness. This solution prioritizes key aspects to delivering tangible local-scale results: Involving the community, local engagement, education and awareness, applied research, collaboration with government and NGOs and the climate of fisheries.
