Going Vegetarian

Personal / Community: Personal action

Food sub-categories: Diet

Description: Today, the No.1 cause of deforestation in the Amazon is cattle. The energy requirements of raising a calf, growing the necessary protein-rich crops suited for cows, and the large amount of water required are all detrimental to the environment, and this is due to Humanity's insatiable desire for meat. Every acre of land spent feeding 1 cow can be used to feed 5 people. The proposition is simple. Cut down your meat consumption. Instead of everyday, try to eat meat 5 times a week, and slowly decrease the frequency. If enough people take this up, the demand for meat will reduce, and so will greenhouse gas emissions.

Why I love this solution: Being vegetarian is very easy! In India, there are regions where 70-80% of the population is pure vegetarian, since there are numerous protein plant-based sources that have been consumed here for millennia. The only issue is that it is difficult for people to overcome their desires, but by doing so, we become strong-willed individuals who prioritise the health of the planet over the half an hour of pleasure derived from a hamburger.
